Symptoms: lameness (difficulty in using the pelvic limbs, pelvic limb lameness), tail weakness, incontinence, discomfort
Cause: narrowing of the lumbosacral vertebral canal resulting in compression of the caude equina. The most common in large breeds (German Shepherd Dogs). Protrusion of the L7 to S1 disk. The original cause is unknown.
Duration: clinical signs usually beginat 3 to 7 yr of age
First aid: resting, pain relief’s
Urgency: few days
Treatment: surgical (decompression of the cauda equina and spinal nerves)
Therapy success: 70 to 100%
Convalescence: slow (months)
